A 10-million yuan educational allowance will offer up to 42,000 villagers 25 years of free education in the Shipai town of Dongguan city, Guangdong province, the China Business Weekly reports today.
The well-developed Shipai town started a pilot project last September by offering a 320,000-yuan allowance to 64 university students. This year, the town education officials started to offer free education to its villagers.
Chinese economist Mao Yushi, who went to Shipai town on May 12, said, "The money put into free education came from taxes that villagers paid, thus it is reasonable to use the money for education".
The goal is to set up a new example in China's educational reform, said a local authority during an interview.
