The last hundred years

... ´Warmest´means only a few tenths of a degree Celsius at most, but in terms of the global average such differences are quite significant. ...Although there is a distinct trend, the increase is by no means a uniform one; in fact, some periods of cooling as well as warming have occurred.

... To estimate the changes over land, weather stations are chosen where consistent observations have been taken from the same location over a substantial proportion of the whole 130 year period. Changes in sea surface temperature have been estimated by processing over sixty million observations from ships -mostly merchant ships- over the same period. All the observations, from land stations and from ships, are then located within a grid of squares, say 1 degree of latitude by 1 degree of longitude, covering the Earth´s surface. Observations within each square are averaged; the global average is obtained by averaging (after weighting them by area) over the averages for each of the squares.

A number of research groups in different countries have made careful and independent analyses of these observations. In somewhat different ways they have made allowances for factors which could have introduced artificial changes in the records.

Confidence that the observed variations are real is increased by noticing that the trend and the shape of the changes are similar when different selections of the total observations are made... Further indirect indicators such as changes in borehole temperatures and sub-surface ocean temperatures, decrease in snow cover and glacier shrinkage provide independent suport for the observed warming.

... The length of the record from satellites, however, is generally less than twenty years, a comparatively short period in climate terms. It has been suggested that satellite measurements of lower atmospheric temperature since 1979 are not consistent with the trend of rising temperatures in surface observations; a careful analysis, however, confirms that there is satisfactory agreement between the satellite and the surface measurements.

The most obvious feature of the climate record... is that of considerable variability... Some of this variability will have arisen through causes external to the atmosphere and the oceans... But there is no need to invoke volcanoes or other external causes to explain most of the variations in the record. Their most likely causes is internal variations within the total climate system, for instance between different parts of the ocean.

The warming during the 20th century has not been uniform over the globe. The recent warming has been the greatest over the mid latitude continents in winter and spring -some of the most detailed studies have been for the United States... The broad features of these changes in temperature and precipitation are consistent with what is expected because of the influence of increased greenhouse gases.

... inadequate data exist to determine whether consistent global changes in any of these weather extremes have ocurred over the 20th century -although on regional scales evidence of changes in some extremes can be seen.

An interesting feature of the increasing temperature during the last few decades has been that, in the daily cycle of temperature, minimum temperatures over land have increased about twice as much as maximum temperatures.

The natural variability shown in the climate record tends to mask the increasing trend in global average temperature which we expect to occur because of the recent increase in greenhouse gases... from what is known of natural climate variability, both from proxy records from the past and from climate models, it is unlikely that the recent observed warming trend is entirely natural in origin... although the expected signal is still emerging from the noise of natural variability, the balance of evidence suggests that, in the climate record, there is a dicernible human influence on global climate.

Eventually, as the greenhouse gases increase further, the amount of warming is expected to become sufficiently large that it will swamp the natural variations in climate; then it will be clear that global warming has almost certainly been observed. In the meantime, the global average temperature may continue to increase or it could, because of natural variability, show periods of decrease. Over the next few years, scientists will be inspecting climate change and climate events most carefully as they occur, looking for signs of global warming and to see how far actual events can be related to scientific predictions.

Well, first that all, hoy quiero dejar de lado el tono chacotero para abordar nuestros minusculos problemas nacionales; have mercy, sin embargo, si por un momento, involuntariamente -tal vez ¿inconscientemente?-, dejo el terso discurso para retornar al poco exitoso, I know, y pretendido tono jocoso de mis posts.

Let´s see! Empecemos por encarrilar a aquellas "contadísimas" ovejas que pudieran estar confundidas con mis teorías de la correspondencia biunívoca: la simplicidad-complejidad de la cosas últimas. Un concepto que indudablemente muy pocos alcanzarán a aprehender en su totalidad, je, je. Así, como en amplias regiones de América Latina en que "all colurs bleed to red", en no pocos casos un poquillo desteñido el colorado, el fin último de todos los mexicanos bien nacidos, debe ser la reducción de la lacerante desigualdad socioeconómica entre sus habitantes, la eterna lucha de clases en palabras de uno de los monstruos de lo mejor del pensamiento humano de ayer y ahora.

¿Cómo resolver tan simple cuestión? He ahí uno de los puntos torales de nuestra disertación; la complejidad de las soluciones ha de radicar en la definición y el desmenuzamiento del problema. Si usted ha sido ya lentamente adoctrinado, complicará la pregunta y buscará sin duda las respuestas entre las numerosas (¿todavía?) técnicas (que Dios me perdone, pero ni siquiera llegan a teorías) en boga: focus groups, competitividad, calidad total, etc., etc., etc., evitando a toda costa encarar el quid del asunto.

¿Cuál México, compa? Hoy por la mañana, veo y escucho las declaraciones de un estudiante tec sobre los insignificantes contratiempos que no han trastornado la cotidianidad de la capital neolonesa. "Están equivocados si con una marcha creen que los delincuentes van a entender... queremos que termine esta violencia que no es solo aquí sino en todo México... tenemos que discutirlo y encontrar una solución." Well, it seems one of my former preparatory teachers was "partially" right: "pa´que vienen a posarlas aquí y hacen perder dinero a sus papás, chequen la fortuna que gastan en mensualidades para que, al final, un plomero termine ganando más que ustedes...". Mmm, la neta si se paga un buen baro, pero dudo que algunos de mis ex classmates tengan que padecer como la mayoría el job hunting; en cuanto al milusos seguramente, como algunos estuvieron recluidos por un rato en las academias militarizadas gringas, se refería a ese país. En todo caso, la feroz competencia, la libran ustedes por algo más que un abultado salario, Am I right? Lo que aún no ha cambiado es su limitada percepción del mundo con la que egresan ustedes, mi estimado.

No Doubt, you are much better that me in many other subjects, pero todavía recuerdo la cara de sorpresa del Luigi por my essay sobre La Reforma en Historia de México (el bato consideró que era el único que merecía un 10 limpiecito en ese período, la otra vez que lo agarré de güenas fue por el escrito sobre el Infierno de Dante). Juárez con los de Tlaxcala, Colima, Campeche o inclusive Cd. Victoria, ¿no creen?.

No me he de ufanar por ello, pero lamentablemente les avisé con harta anticipación que venía la opción paramilitarizada para consolidar un regimen blandengue -particularly keen to certain foreign "friends"- en México, pa' luego coyotear a manos libres nuestros recursos naturales.

No, no nos tragamos tal engaño, por ello hemos de instruir a nuestras jovenes reservas en los conocimientos científicos sin olvidar en modo alguno su contraparte humanista, de tal modo que ninguno de nosotros llegue a concebir siquiera la maquiavélica idea de que, por su genialidad , está por encima del resto del rebaño sagrado.

No creo que haya que encontrar respuestas complejas, más bien pienso que ahora conviene hacer más sencilla la interrogante para todos nosotros: Yo no estoy bien si no lo estás tú también; cuando lo logremos sin duda habremos caminado un largo trecho más hacia nuestra liberación nacional.
