Wealth inequality to blame for UK's social ills, TUC says

Union leaders will today attempt to capitalise on public anger over City bonuses as they launch a campaign for greater equality and a new focus on alleviating poverty in the UK.
The Trades Union Congress will hold a one-day conference at which it will claim that the UK is one of the most unequal societies in Europe, and that the country's growing wealth gap underpins many of our most pressing social problems, including violence, drug abuse, poor health and crime.
"We have reached a critical point in the debate about poverty, inequality and welfare in Britain," the TUC deputy general secretary, Frances O'Grady, will say. "Whether it's promoting claimant rights, tackling in-work poverty or campaigning for a minimum income, we've got to keep pressing for change. With public revulsion growing at City greed and bankers' bonuses, and with a deepening clamour for a fairer, more equal society, we can build a welfare state we can all be proud of."
