The man who smoked dope to stay ill

The Guardian

After lights-out, at around 11pm, four 14-year-old boys sat in Dan's room, gazing nervously at the little brown lump in his hand. Dan was their ringleader, and he was good at rolling cigarettes, so he stuck together the Rizla papers. It took a bit of experimentation, but then he figured out how to heat the hash to make it crumble. He put it all in, swivelled the papers, and licked off his first joint.

"Ya, mon, sweeeet," Dan rejoiced in his best 1980s Rastafarian accent. The other three gawped as he smoked. They'd all been performing together in a school play, and this was meant to be their rebellious celebration. But, when it came to the moment, the other three boys shied away. Not because they were afraid of being expelled from their elite boarding school; more because of all those spooky stories about ending up in some druggy hell. Dan giggled as they filed out. What a bunch of poofs! Dreamily, he lay back on his bed and let thoughts of his own brilliance dance around the Bob Marley poster on his wall.

Dan had been playing Prospero in a triumphant version of The Tempest - so triumphant that a visiting teacher from a London acting college had said it was the best Shakespearean performance by a child she'd seen. Amazing to watch a 14-year-old transmogrify so completely into the despairing old man of magic. Each night for a week, Dan had wept real tears as he spoke Prospero's epilogue of submission to the audience: "Now my charms are all o'erthrown. And what strength I have's mine own, which is most faint..."

These days, in his late 30s, Dan will still cry if he tries to recite those lines. They represent the last time he did not have to struggle for his sanity. A year later, he was in hospital. Those other three boys all went on to careers in TV and film, made money, had children. Dan's career had been a two-decade journey through the psychiatric system, cursed by a disorder that combined the wild moods of manic depression with the delusions of schizophrenia.

A Freudian psychoanalyst once tried to explain to Dan what had precipitated the onset of his psychotic episodes. His childhood had evidently been happy, so the analyst had talked about the effects of imaginatively imbibing the haunted universe of The Tempest at a vulnerable point in adolescence. He had described Dan's manias and hallucinations as "psychic retreats". When Prospero gives up his magic, he is faced with the intolerable reality of being merely human. Dan would rather flee to a psychotic hell than remain bound to such a reality. "Now I want Spirits to enforce, art to enchant," as Prospero says. "And my ending is despair..."

Current psychiatry scoffs at such cranky interpretations. Scientific evidence suggests that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder spring largely from inherited pre-dispositions; indeed, Dan could cite a manic-depressive grandmother and a schizophrenic great uncle as genetic precedents for his own condition. Genes are just part of the equation, however. Thereafter, the question turns to the triggers. What transforms a predisposition into a disorder?

One trigger can be dope. A pivotal psychiatric study, conducted over 20 years in New Zealand, recently suggested that one in four teenagers is dangerously susceptible to cannabis use. Those in the study who tried it at the age of 15 were four and a half times more likely to develop schizophrenia by the age of 26 than those who did not. The implication of a specific interaction between cannabis and a variety of the COMT gene nevertheless remains controversial. Is this a deep cause, or a mere association?

What remains clear, however, is that cannabis - especially new and powerful types of hydroponically produced "skunk" - are acutely risky for those who already have psychiatric illnesses. Dan has never really been into drugs, but his psychotic episodes have often developed after a casual smoke. On one occasion, his grim Scottish psychiatrist was so enraged by the stupidity of taking the risk that he gave Dan an ultimatum. Either quit cannabis for ever, or find another psychiatrist. "You know what I just said to an addict with schizophrenia?" Professor Boyle asked rhetorically. " 'Stick to the heroin if you must, laddie, but stay off the weed!' "

Dan felt cornered. He groped for an explanation. For almost a year before the last episode he had been OK. Life had been shit, of course, but at least he hadn't been ill. What he blurted out next felt peculiar, as if he'd actually known all along what he'd been doing. He wouldn't call it a psychic retreat as such, but after 20 years of madness, psychotic experience was more familiar to him than normality. "I smoke dope because I can't cope with staying well," he said.

Nocturno
de Gabriela Mistral

Padre Nuestro, que estás en los cielos,
¡por qué te has olvidado de mí!
Te acordaste del fruto en febrero,
al llagarse su pulpa rubí.
¡Llevo abierto también mi costado,
y no quieres mirar hacia mí!

Te acordaste del negro racimo,
y lo diste al lagar carmesí;
aun no quieres mi pecho oprimir!

Caminando vi abrir las violetas;
el falerno del viento bebí,
y he bajado, amarillos, mis párpados,
por no ver más enero ni abril.

Y he apretado la boca, anegada

Me vendió el que besó mi mejilla;

y el del alba que debe venir;
¡el cansancio del cielo de estaño
y el cansancio del cielo de añil!

Ahora suelto la mártir sandalia
y las trenzas pidiendo dormir.
Y perdida en la noche, levanto
el clamor aprendido deTi:
¡Padre Nuestro, que estás en los cielos,
por qué te has olvidado de mí!

Dr Zubeidy is a hunted man. His picture has been shown on Iraqi TV as a wanted terrorist. Since Shia militia came to his house in Baghdad to kill him last year - and kidnapped and murdered his brother-in-law when they realised that he wasn't home - he has rarely slept in the same place twice and always carries fake ID. "Fortunately there are many thousands who are also wanted," he says. "But I have had to move 37 times. It has been very difficult for my children in particular - they have often had to change schools and it has had a psychological impact on them. But they understand what this is all about - they're also fighting with me in their own way." A medical doctor in his late 40s, Abd al-Rahman al-Zubeidy was imprisoned under Saddam Hussein for hiding and treating a friend who had got into a fight with an official from Saddam's Ba'athist regime. He was released in a general amnesty in the run-up to the US-British invasion.

Sitting next to him, Abdallah Suleiman Omary, an engineer with a stubbly beard and reading glasses, draws a map of the al-Ghazaliya area of Baghdad, where he was living until recently, in an attempt to explain the impact of the recent US "surge" in troop numbers on areas where Sunni resistance is strongest. "They have now built a concrete wall blocking all but one road into the district from the Baghdad expressway," he says. "To get to my house, you have to pass a bridge with a checkpoint, an American base, a gated entrance and a further four checkpoints in one kilometre. Yesterday, they banned all cars in the area because of the fear of car bombs.

"But," he adds, "we are still able to launch attacks. Weapons are brought in by hand. Fighters watch the soldiers until they leave the checkpoints to buy something - then they follow them and kill them."

Both men are leaders of the Iraqi resistance - or insurgency, as it is usually known in Britain and the US. Zubeidy is the political spokesman of Ansar al-Sunna, an Islamist armed group with a ferocious reputation in Iraq, and Omary is head of the political department of the 1920 Revolution Brigades, a more nationalist organisation whose name commemorates an uprising against British rule after the first world war.

For four years, the resistance has stayed in the shadows, without a public face and apparently leaderless, while delivering an ever more violent and devastating campaign that has brought the world's most powerful army to the brink of defeat and changed the balance of global power. As al-Qaida-style suicide atrocities against civilians and Sunni-Shia sectarian death-squad killings have escalated in the past couple of years, they have tended to shift attention away from the guerrilla war against the US and British occupation forces and their client Iraqi army and police. But it is that growing war of attrition - there are now more than 5,000 attacks a month against US forces across Iraq and the past three months have been the bloodiest for US forces since the 2003 invasion (331 deaths and 2,029 wounded) - that has pushed the demand for withdrawal from Iraq to the top of the political agenda in Washington.

Until now, the resistance groups have operated entirely underground and their leaders have communicated with the outside world mainly through internet postings, if at all. (Omary's group specialises in hi-tech communication and produces photos and videos, some of them reproduced here, which are strongly reminiscent of IRA propaganda of the 1980s.) Now they have decided to speak to the western press for the first time as they prepare to launch a public face and a common political programme in anticipation of eventual American and British withdrawal from Iraq. Seven of the most important Sunni-led armed organisations - excluding al-Qaida and the Ba'athists - have agreed to form a united front and have drawn up a series of demands to form the basis of future negotiations with the occupation forces.

Our meeting takes place in Damascus, arranged through a series of intermediaries. As well as Zubeidy and Omary, one of the political leaders of Iraqi Hamas - a trader from Fallujah who uses the nom de guerre Abu Ahmad - also takes part in a conversation that lasts for nine hours. All three have come recently from Iraq and are wary and uncertain of how open to be in this interview as they edge towards a public profile for the Iraqi resistance. These are the kinds of insurgent leaders who - according to Dan Goure, vice-president of the Virginia-based Lexington Institute and a Pentagon consultant - the US military intelligence is increasingly targeting in the hope of taking out the leadership of what the resistance leaders themselves estimate as a 50,000-strong movement.

At least 1.2 million Iraqis have sought refuge in Syria since the US invasion - the equivalent of about 5 million refugees in Britain - and Syria is regularly accused by the US of supporting or turning a blind eye to insurgent groups operating across the border. Zubeidy insists that they have no direct contact with the Syrian regime - and they certainly don't advertise their presence in Damascus. "Our organisations depend on stores of weapons left by Saddam Hussein, or we buy them from the Iraqi army through merchants," says Zubeidy. "We try to avoid links with the Syrians. Either they can sell us out at any time if there is heavy pressure on them, or we risk being completely controlled by them."

Indeed, all the groups say they have no support from any regime, although they do claim that there has been indirect contact with France about creating the conditions for a public office. And, a couple of years back, Zubeidy says, Iran offered the Islamic resistance groups weapons, money and also help with stopping attacks from the Shia militia, but while he believes al-Qaida accepted, the others did not. "We do not trust Iran. We need help from Arab and other governments. But although Turkey and Saudi Arabia have encouraged the resistance to unite, they are afraid of us".

"We are the only resistance movement in modern history that has received no help or support from any other country," Omary declares. "The reason is that we are fighting America." The 1920 Revolution Brigades spokesman is an articulate and sophisticated operator, who - if he survives the counterinsurgency and sectarian onslaught - clearly has the potential to become an influential voice in a future Iraq. "Our position is that there are two kinds of people in Iraq: not Sunni and Shia, Kurdish and Arab, Muslim and Christian, but those who are with the occupation and those who are against it." Anyone who takes part in the institutions set up by the occupation, such as the government and parliament, army or police, are regarded as collaborators. "Our organisation began its operations in the first days after the invasion and wherever you find the occupation, you will find us: from Mosul, Baghdad and Samarra to Basra, Hillah and Kirkuk," continues Omary. "Our group has also carried out attacks on British forces in Basra." They are not a Sunni sectarian organisation, he insists: "The military leader of the Brigades is a Kurd. Iraq is for all Iraqis and we only distinguish between those who cooperate with the occupation and those who do not. If my brother cooperates with the occupation, I will kill him - but the innocent must not be touched."

What makes Iraqis join the resistance? "Many people come to the resistance because of their Islamic background, some because of what has happened to their relatives at the hands of the occupation armies," says Zubeidy. "American forces have committed very big crimes against the Iraqi people. All Iraqis hate the foreign forces and won't forget what they have done. Generally, British forces have acted as a helper to the US and the British government shares the blame for everything that happened to Iraq. But their actions are seen as having been less cruel than the Americans."

At the heart of the new insurgent alliance is a rejection of the murderous sectarianism that has come to grip Iraq - and the role of al-Qaida in particular. Most striking is the case of Zubeidy, whose hardline salafist (purist Islamic) group Ansar al-Sunna recently split in half over the issue (his faction is now called the Legitimate Committee of Ansar al-Sunna - Goure says such splits are endemic in the resistance movement). "We wanted to unite with other resistance forces, but the other group is moving closer to al-Qaida and refused. Al-Qaida has brought benefits and problems," Zubeidy says. "They attack the US occupiers. But every day the problems they bring become greater than the benefits.

"Resistance isn't just about killing Americans without any aims or goals," he continues. "Our people have come to hate al-Qaida, which gives the impression to the outside world that the resistance in Iraq are terrorists. Suicide bombing is not the best way to fight because it kills innocent civilians. We are against indiscriminate killing - fighting should be concentrated only on the enemy. They [al-Qaida] believe that all Shia are kuffar [unbelievers] - and most of the Sunnis as well." They estimate that al-Qaida now carries out between a fifth and a third of all attacks in Iraq.

But they say that it is necessary for the Sunni-based groups to ally with the Shia. "Even though that is not easy," says Zubeidy. "A great gap has opened up between Sunni and Shia under the occupation and al-Qaida has contributed to that - as have the US and Iran. Most of al-Qaida's members are Iraqis but its leaders are mostly foreigners. The Americans magnify their role, even though they are responsible for a minority of resistance operations - remember that the Americans brought al-Qaida to Iraq."

Sectarian division has been inflamed, Omary adds, as part of the "old British imperial tactic of divide and rule". Who benefits, asks Abu Ahmad, when there are bombs in markets? "It is only the occupying forces and Iran." All the Sunni-led resistance groups are acutely aware of the threat posed by sectarian division to the future of Iraq and emphasise their strong links to those Shia with fewer links to Iran (what they call Arab "national" Shia), but reject any suggestion of making common cause with the Shia militia and political parties - including the anti-American Mahdi Army, which is thought to be behind many of the current armed attacks on British forces in Basra - because of their participation in the occupation's political institutions and their role in ethnic cleansing and sectarian killings. The man who came to Zubeidy's house last year and killed his brother-in-law after demanding a million-dollar ransom claimed to be from the Mahdi Army.

To emphasise their own distance from the kind of atrocities that have become associated in the western imagination with the Iraqi insurgency, Omary mentions the case of Wassef Hassoun, a Muslim Lebanese-American US marine captured by the 1920 Revolution Brigades and released after he swore an oath on the Koran that he would not continue to fight with US forces. "Our people took him from the marine base outside Falluja - they got into the base in a rubbish lorry and took him out with them. They let him go after he pledged not to go back to his unit. We did something similar with an Egyptian lorry driver working for a transport company under contract to the Americans." Hassoun was later charged with desertion after he failed to return from leave after his release. He is still missing.

During breaks in the conversation, Zubeidy stops to pray, Abu Ahmad fingers his worry beads and Omary shows me a video clip on his mobile phone of the body of a neighbour's 12-year-old child, Mustafa, with a huge wound in his chest, laid out for mourning in the family home. "He was shot last month by an Iraqi soldier 200 metres from an American base, apparently for fun. The same night, resistance fighters went to the Iraqi soldiers' billet and killed all of them in the house, half a dozen of them, by cutting their throats." While all seven of the armed groups joining the new front reject attacks on civilians, they have no qualms about brutal violence against Iraqi police and soldiers, or US and British troops. But aren't there other, more peaceful ways to try to achieve their aims?

"Peaceful resistance will not end the occupation," states Abu Ahmad. "The US has made clear that it intends to stay in Iraq for many decades. Now it is a common view in the resistance that they will start to withdraw within a year." Right or wrong, that is one of the factors that has led to the decision to form the new front, which is planned to be called the Political Office for the Iraqi Resistance. As well as Iraqi Hamas, the 1920 Revolution Brigades and the new Ansar al-Sunna, it is to include the powerful Jaish (army) al-Islami, Jaish al-Mujahideen, Jama' and Jaish al-Rashideen. The plan is to hold a congress of the seven groups to announce the front's formation and then move towards the establishment of some form of public presence outside Iraq, though it is hard to see any state being prepared to risk the wrath of the US by hosting such an outfit. "It would need UN protection," Zubeidy suggests.

They have already agreed that at the heart of the programme will be a commitment to liberate Iraq from all foreign troops; recognise only those who reject the occupation and its institutions as able to represent Iraq; demand compensation from foreign forces for the devastation they have inflicted on the country; declare all decisions taken by the occupying states and its client government null and void; and reject any change in population distribution. The aim is for the front to join other independent anti-occupation forces from across the country to negotiate with the Americans for their withdrawal. A temporary technocratic government would then manage the country during a transition period until free elections could be held for a new independent government. Even Saddam's revamped Ba'ath party - which now plays what is regarded as a reduced role in the resistance - is an enthusiast for fully competitive elections.

But what if the US doesn't start to withdraw from Iraq next year, as the resistance groups expect, or merely withdraws to the huge military bases it has built around Iraq to intervene as and when it sees fit? "As long as foreign forces remain in Iraq," Omary replies, "the Iraqi government will not be independent. And armed resistance will continue."

Defying silence in Honduras

Honduran journalist Dina Meza has won the 2007 Amnesty International Special Award for Human Rights Journalism Under Threat.

Dina Meza

A lawyer for her online magazine Revistazo, which has investigated abuses by the country's burgeoning private security companies, was shot dead in December 2006 in a crime which remains unsolved.

Here Meza, a mother of three teenagers and a devout Christian, tells the BBC News website about the pressure she and her six fellow journalists work under, and why she refuses to give up:

In the Middle East, the war is obvious. We can see the physical destruction of buildings and deaths of people.

But in Latin America, the war is different: it is one waged against poverty, hunger and a violence rooted in corruption which targets people who express their own ideas.

It is a silent war against the impunity of recent years. It is a fight for a fair society.

Corrupt legal systems, corrupted media and impunity for the torturers and killers of the 1980s are phenomena to be found across Latin America.

Journalists here only have two options: you are either for or against the oppressed.

If we can get into the shoes of those who are suffering, we will feel their pain and will be moved to do something.

Wretched conditions

My colleagues and I created Revistazo because we could not publish our stories about human rights abuses anywhere else.

Dina Meza (seated) at work in her office in Tegucigalpa (image: Amnesty International)
We want the state to protect us properly

As a website, we aim to impact on decision-makers in Honduras and give the people whose interests we defend a hearing.

One area we have been investigating particularly is the private security companies which appeared in Honduras after the Cold War of the 1980s when our country was nicknamed the "backyard of the USA".

They were mainly formed by landowners and people who had violated human rights during the war, and who suddenly found themselves without the protection of the army.

There are more than 350 such companies in Honduras. They employ seven times more people than the whole of the national police force.

They are overflowing with weapons and the state has little control over them.

It is very easy to violate the human rights of their employees who typically have very little education and come from very small villages. They often have to work around the clock for no extra pay and without holidays.

They have to buy their own uniforms and can have their pay docked for no reason. They are given weapons in very poor condition and have to pay for any bullets they fire.

We decided to take up their case because nobody else was fighting for their rights.

Threats and murder

Since last year staff on the magazine have been threatened more and more.

We have had our telephones bugged and we and our families have been followed in the street. Threats get posted in the comments section of our website.

Once I got a message telling me that my teenage daughter was "very good-looking".

It is not easy to say who is behind this harassment. We also investigate the pay of senior civil servants and we also cover the rights of workers in the fast-food industry.

Our lawyer, Dionisio Diaz Garcia, was murdered on 4 December.

All seven of us have been assigned one police bodyguard each but they are effectively only there during office hours.

We also have to pay for their meals and travel expenses though that should be the state's responsibility.

Even then, we do not know if we are really safe because the security companies have a lot of influence within the police.

Invitation to leave

We want the state to protect us properly and to find the murderers of our lawyer.

I compare the risk my family and I now run with the legacy which I would leave my children by giving up

One state official privately offered me plane tickets to leave Honduras but I said I could not because I needed to continue my work.

He was asking me to stop our investigation of the murder because of a "clash of interests".

I asked what these interests were and he said he did not want to go into it and that he would give me no more information.

When I recently asked the same official what progress had been made to solve the murder, he got quite annoyed and told me he was going to take no further action regarding our problem.

When you get a reply like that from the state, all you can do is put your faith in God and go on working.

I compare the risk my family and I now run with the legacy which I would leave my children by giving up.

I would leave them a corrupt society with a lot of injustice. It is just not worth it. My children know what I do and they know the risk we run. They also trust in God and know that He is protecting us.

So no, I won't give up.

Repression continues in Oaxaca

With the celebration of one of the biggest traditional parties not only in Mexico but in Latin America, the ‘Guelaguetza’, Ulises Ruiz has put his ruling capabilities clear. He doesn’t understand people’s culture and traditions and hence his idea of government is has more to do with one of administrating a business rather than preserving and promoting Oaxaca’s cultural legacy.

Guelaguetza is a zapotec word that means ‘sharing’. It is a time when people from all around Oaxaca come to the capital to share whatever little they have with their other fellows. It has so happened that since some time ago, some tourist agencies along with the government thought that it was a good idea to show that phenomena in order to attract more people and with it promote Oaxacas’ culture. So on the one hand, more people would get jobs and income, which is much needed, and on the other hand, cultural heritage would be known all around the world.

That seemed to be the deal. Apparently, now that assassin of Ulises Ruiz wants to show the world a culture that he doesn’t understand or more precisely a culture that he wants to kill, since culture belongs to people and Ulises is been killing Oaxacans. One person has died just this monay 16th of July and about 40 more were arrested.

People is very aware of the fact that their culture and traditions are not for sale and that the fact that before there was a unwritten agreement in which all, or nearly all benefited from does not mean that people has to give up their traditions for Ulises to show a Oaxaca that is in ‘peace and working’.

So what is the big problem now? For Ulises the problem is to legitimize himself by showing the rest of the country and the world that Oaxaca has moved on from last year uprisings. For the people the problem is that they want to celebrate what they have been celebrating for centuries, perhaps for more than thousand years, the guelaguetza. So it all comes to one single battle and battlefield: the guelaguetza, the commercial version by the government, and the popular version by the people. That wouldn’t be much of a problem as they could carry on doing them in different places. The problem is, the place: ‘el cerro del fortin’, ‘the small fort hill’ (my own translation) is the problem, and the battlefield.

Next is a list of people arrested in the battle for that hill, and two videos of one of the battles between the people and the police. (taken from http://www.oaxacaenpiedelucha.blogspot.com/)

Cito textualmente a Adolfo Aguilar Zinser:

Well, ¿qué debemos entonces concluir?

NO APRENDEN. Not bad, huh?

No volteó.
