a mí me has amado.

Juan 17:23 (Casiodoro de Reina, 1569)

ED LUBY'S KEY CLUB

He turned his attention to the drunk's companion. “Don't you ever come out here again,” he said to her. “I wouldn't let you in if you was accompanied by the President of the United States. That's one reason I turned this place into a club-so I keep pigs like you out, so I wouldn't have to serve good food to a-” And he called her what she obviously was.

There's worse things than that,” she said.

“Name one,” said Luby.

“I never killed anybody,” she said. “That's more than you can say.”

The accusation didn't bother Luby at all. “You want to talk to the chief of police about that?” he said. “You want to talk to the mayor? You want to talk to Judge Wampler about that? Murder's a very serious crime in this town.” He moved very close to her, looked her up and down. “So's being a loudmouth, and so's being a-” He called her what she was again.

“You made me sick,” he said.

And then he slapped her with all his might. He hit her so hard that she spun and crumpled without making a sound.

The drunk backed away from her, , from Luby, from Luby's thug. He did nothing to help her, only wanted to get away.

But Harve Elliot was out of his car and running at Luby before his wife could stop him.

Harvey hit Luby once in the belly, a belly, a belly that was as hard as a cast-iron boiler.

That satisfaction was the last thing Harver remembered-until he came to in his car. The car was going fast. Claire was driving.

Harve's clinging, aching head was lolling on the shoulder on his wife of fourteen years.

“Yo también padecí de esos dolores”, y every now and then, they come back to me again, como bien podría dar fe mi mujer.

Sorry gotta take a toilet break

“No, love. Those who are are appointed as decision makers (call them leaders would be too much) usually forget that they need the others to get a goal. In those cases when is needed to work as a group, the one with the highest responsibility got to take into account the different strengths and weaknesses of every member of the team, and not only imposing his/her point of view. We will not talk, for the moment, about the repugnant one when he/she pretends to be the origin of the brightest idea that started all. For now, we'll say that there is a confusion about what a big change is; in these days is widely accepted as an individual improvement on position or salary, instead of a healthier communal-shared development. I'm pretty sure it can be easily observed that situation in your own country, but much more here, babe.”

Looking forward to see it, myths; looking forward to see that, indeed.

'Humanitarian intervention’may cause bigger disaster
By Tian Wenlin (People's Daily)
17:22, June 01, 2012

Edited and translated by People's Daily Online

Eight Western nations, including the United States and the United Kingdom, expelled Syrian diplomats Tuesday in response to a massacre of civilians in the Syrian town of Houla on May 25. The new French president even stated that he would not rule out international military intervention in Syria.

Western powers have long been intervening in other countries' domestic affairs under the banner of "preventing humanitarian catastrophes." The Houla massacre has undoubtedly offered them a perfect excuse to intervene in Syria’s domestic affairs. It is easy to imagine that they will impose harsher sanctions on the violence-riddled country, and may even launch military intervention.

One-third of elderly Americans die in medical debt
By Fred Mazelis
1 June 2012

A report on out-of-pocket spending for medical care in the last five years of life, presented at the American Geriatrics Society annual meeting in early May, illustrates the financial disaster facing millions of retirees and their families, even as the Republicans and Democrats squabble in Washington over how to impose even greater burdens on working people.

The report was prepared by a team led by Dr. Amy Kelley, of the Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Dr. Kelley’s paper was based on data taken from the national Health and Retirement Study, and relied on interviews with health care proxies of those who died between 2002-2008. The sample included 3,209 people who were at least 70 years old when they died, with the median age at death 84.3 years.

Obama Order Sped Up Wave of Cyberattacks Against Iran
By DAVID E. SANGER

WASHINGTON — From his first months in office, President Obama secretly ordered increasingly sophisticated attacks on the computer systems that run Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facilities, significantly expanding America’s first sustained use of cyberweapons, according to participants in the program.

Mr. Obama decided to accelerate the attacks — begun in the Bush administration and code-named Olympic Games — even after an element of the program accidentally became public in the summer of 2010 because of a programming error that allowed it to escape Iran’s Natanz plant and sent it around the world on the Internet. Computer security experts who began studying the worm, which had been developed by the United States and Israel, gave it a name: Stuxnet.

In December 2010 the heat-seeking Internet pranksters known as Anonymous attacked PayPal, the online bill-paying business. PayPal had been a conduit for donations to WikiLeaks, the rogue whistle-blower site, until WikiLeaks released a huge cache of State Department internal messages. PayPal cut off donations to the WikiLeaks Web site. Then PayPal’s own site was shut down, as Anonymous did what it did best: exaggerate the weight of its own influence.

But, according to “We Are Anonymous,” by Parmy Olson, the London bureau chief for Forbes magazine, it had taken a single hacker and his botnet to close PayPal. “He then signed off and went to have his breakfast,” she writes.

Mary Dejevsky: It's no longer the Murdoch press in the dock, it's the politicians

Leveson is doing the sort of inquisitorial job that rightly belongs to Parliament

Mary Dejevsky
Friday, 1 June 2012

At the time, it must have seemed like such a good idea. With the country united in righteous indignation about the hacking of Milly Dowler's phone, and the gloss – that this was a criminal, nay heartless, act typical of a certain strand of the British press – the Prime Minister adopted a solemn mien and announced an inquiry.

But not only must it have seemed a good idea, in the sense of imposing the firm smack of Government and simultaneously feeling the public's pain, it must have seemed copper-bottomed safe. An inquiry might not actually do any good, but what possible harm could be done by a three-part inquiry into "the culture, practices and ethics of the press"? You can almost hear the wry laughter at the very mention of "ethics". Public money was earmarked, Lord Justice Leveson was appointed to preside, and the whole fandango swept into the Royal Courts of Justice with a speed quite extraordinary for anything initiated by government.

Fighting Erupts in Hunger-Stricken Yemen

New fighting has erupted in Yemen as part of a government offensive on al-Qaeda militants in the country’s south. Seven people were killed earlier today when fighters attacked a town held by government troops. The clashes came hours after some 20 fighters and seven soldiers exchanged fire on the outskirts of Jaar. The ongoing fighting in Yemen comes amidst a major food crisis, with some five million people undernourished and 300,000 children facing life-threatening malnutrition.
Syrian Rebels Give Assad Deadline to End Violence

Syrian rebels have issued a 48-hour deadline for the regime of President Bashar al-Assad to comply with an international peace plan or face renewed fighting. The Free Syrian Army says it will give Assad’s forces until early Friday morning to adhere to the agreement brokered by international envoy Kofi Annan. Speaking in Turkey, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Syria is at risk of a full-scale civil war.

Ban Ki-moon: "The joint special envoy, Mr. Kofi Annan, has expressed his concerns that we may have reached a tipping point in Syria, that the massacre of civilians of the sort seen last weekend could plunge Syria into a catastrophic civil war, a civil war from which the country would never recover. I demand that the government of Syria act on its commitment under the Annan peace plan."

U.S. Envoy Warns Syria of "Actions Outside" the United Nations

In the latest violence reported in Syria, U.N. observers say 13 bodies have been discovered in an eastern area with their hands tied behind their backs. Syrian forces continue to bomb the rebel-held area of Homs. At the United Nations, U.S. envoy Susan Rice said Syria faces unspecified consequences should it continue to flout the Annan peace plan.

Susan Rice: "Members of this council and members of the international community are left with the option only of having to consider whether they’re prepared to take actions outside of the Annan plan and the authority of this council. That scenario obviously is the one we all have sought to avoid through support for the Annan plan. The decision rests in the first instance with the Syrian government."

More Syrian Diplomats Expelled After Houla Massacre

The Assad regime has faced growing international pressure following the massacre of more than 100 people in Houla last week. On Wednesday, Turkey became the latest country to expel a Syrian diplomat, joining with 12 others. Also speaking at the United Nations, Syrian envoy Bashar Ja’afari denied government responsibility for the killings in Houla.
Iraq Bombings Kill 13, Wound Dozens

In Iraq, at least 13 people have died in a series of bombings in Baghdad. The deadliest attack occurred when a parked car exploded outside of a crowded restaurant, killing 10 people and wounding 25 others.
Civilian Deaths Drop in Afghanistan for 1st Time in 5 Years

New figures show civilian deaths in Afghanistan are showing at least a temporary decline for the first time in five years. According to the United Nations, killings of civilians dropped 21 percent in the first four months of the year. Last year was the deadliest on record for civilians in the more than decade-long Afghan war.
Pakistani Doctor Sentenced for Ties to Warlord

Reports have emerged a Pakistani doctor sentenced to 33 years in prison after helping to track down Osama bin Laden was actually convicted of colluding with an Islamist warlord — not of aiding the CIA. The news comes after U.S. lawmakers voted to cut $33 million in aid to Pakistan in response to Shakil Afridi’s sentence. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had also condemned his conviction. Afridi had worked with the CIA to set up a fake vaccination program to help locate bin Laden. But a Pakistani court reportedly declined to examine Afridi’s CIA ties, instead focusing on his connection to a warlord whose fighters are battling the Pakistan army.
Hundreds of Tibetans Detained Protesting Chinese Rule

Hundreds of Tibetans have reportedly been detained opposing Chinese rule in Tibet’s capital of Lhasa. The protests broke out after two people set themselves on fire in protest of China earlier this week. It was said to be the first major act of protest against Chinese control in four years.
Florida Governor Advances Purge of Voter Rolls

In election news, Florida Gov. Rick Scott is moving forward with a plan to purge thousands of people from the voting rolls in a state that could be a key battleground in the November election. While the move is ostensibly aimed at cracking down on non-citizens, critics say the process has relied on outdated information and swept up hundreds of eligible citizen voters. Already, citizens have begun receiving letters identifying them as possible non-citizens and requiring them to provide proof of citizenship in order to vote. An analysis by the Miami Herald found Hispanic, Democratic and independent-minded voters are most likely to be targeted in the purge.
Holder: Civil Rights Gains "Hang in the Balance" in Voting Struggle

The news of the Florida voter purge follows a wave of voter ID laws that have passed in multiple states as part of what some see as a bid to disenfranchise Democratic voters ahead of the election. On Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder discussed the attack on voting rights in an address to African-American lawmakers and church leaders in Washington.

Eric Holder: "Despite our nation’s long tradition of extending voting rights to non-property owners and to women, to people of color, to Native Americans, and to younger Americans, today a growing number of our fellow citizens are worried about the same disparities, divisions and problems that nearly five decades ago so many fought to address. In my travels across this country, I’ve heard a consistent drumbeat of concern from citizens who, often for the first time in their lives, now have reason to believe that we are failing to live up to one of our nation’s most noble ideals and that some of the achievements that defined the civil rights movement now hang, again, in the balance.”

Study: Companies Contradict Pro-Climate Stances with Political Donations

A new analysis has found most major companies that have publicly expressed concern about climate change have privately contradicted that stance by donating money to candidates opposed to environmentally friendly policies. The Union of Concerned Scientists found half of the 28 companies studied had misrepresented climate science in their public communications, despite taking public stances against global warming. Less than a third of the companies supported science-based climate policy through their donations, while the rest supported candidates opposed to such policies.
Couples Challenge Illinois Ban on Same-Sex Marriage

Nine couples in Illinois have filed suit to challenge the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. The lawsuit was filed one year to the day after Illinois enacted civil unions for same-sex couples, but continued to deprive them of the full recognitions and protections of marriage.
White House Apologizes for Polish Death Camp Remark

The White House has apologized to Poland over language used by President Obama in honoring Polish resistance fighter Jan Karski earlier this week. Obama referred to a "Polish death camp" without noting Poland was occupied by Nazi Germany. On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Obama misspoke.

Jay Carney: "The President misspoke. He was referring to Nazi death camps in German-occupied Poland. And as we made clear, we regret the misstatement, and that simple misstatement should not at all detract from the clear intention to honor Mr. Karski and, beyond that, all those brave Polish citizens who stood on the side of human dignity in the face of tyranny."

Jan Karski, the Polish diplomat, visited the Warsaw Ghetto and got word out, came to the United States, visited U.S. officials, including the Supreme Court Justice Frankfurter, to talk about what he saw.
Thousands of Canadians Hold "Casserole" March in Solidarity with Quebec Protests

Thousands of people marched in cities across Canada Wednesday night in an act of solidarity with the Quebec student protests. Demonstrators banged pots and pans as they walked through the streets in a nod to the so-called "casserole" protests that have erupted in Quebec since the provincial government imposed an emergency law barring unauthorized demonstrations.
Illinois Legislator Gives Angry Tirade on Assembly Floor

Video of an Illinois Republican legislator launching an angry tirade on the floor of the Illinois General Assembly is making the rounds on the internet. The lawmaker, Mike Bost, exploded in a speech denouncing what he called the excessive power of House leader Mike Madigan, a Democrat.

Mike Bost: "Again, total power in one person’s hands — not the American way! These damn bills that come out here all the damn time, come out here at the last second, and I’ve got to try to figure out how to vote for my people! How ashamed of — or you should be! You should be ashamed of yourselves! I’m sick of it! Every year! We give power to one person! It was not made that way in the Constitution! He was around when it was written! Now we give him — we passed rules that stop each one of us! Enough! I feel like somebody trying to be released from Egypt! Let my people go!"

Russia contributing to potential Syria civil war - US

The US Secretary of State says Russia's policy toward Syria will contribute to a potential civil war.

Hillary Clinton's comments came after Russia and China renewed opposition to tougher UN Security Council action.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has repeated a warning that Syria could be moving towards "catastrophic" civil war, in the wake of the Houla massacre.

Rebel commanders are split on whether to abandon a ceasefire if Syrian forces do not withdraw to barracks.

Colonel Qassim Saadeddine of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in Homs said that if there was no government response by Friday lunchtime, the FSA would consider itself "no longer bound" by the plan.

Record low turnout predicted in Irish treaty vote

Pro-Europeans predict narrow victory in vote on EU fiscal treaty despite fears the low turnout could have favoured rivals
    Henry McDonald in Dublin
    guardian.co.uk, Thursday 31 May 2012 19.39 BST
The fate of 27 European states and the single currency lies in the hands of less than half the Irish electorate after what appears to have been a historically low turnout in Ireland's referendum on the EU fiscal treaty.

After polling stations closed at 10pm, turnout in Dublin was estimated at 38%, but some of the north-western counties averaged as low as 20%. In the Cork area turnout was also described as slow through the day, but it picked up to more than 30% in the evening. The overall turnout is estimated to be close to 50% – one of the lowest in Irish history.

Around 150 of the world’s elite approached the grounds of a suburban Virginia hotel on Thursday for the first day of the 2012 Bilderberg Conference, but also on hand were throngs of protesters who gathered to opposed the top-secret gathering.

Journalists and critics of the annual clandestine conference stationed themselves outside of a Chantilly, Virginia Marriott hotel near Washington, DC early Thursday to catch a glimpse of the government officials, entrepreneurs and other assorted members of the privileged elite who had gathered for this year’s event.

Plan X: Pentagon's blueprint for full-fledged cyberwar

Published: 31 May, 2012, 21:24
Edited: 31 May, 2012, 21:24
The wheels of the war machine are ever turning inside the Pentagon, but the Defense Department’s latest endeavor won’t involve fighter jets and armored tanks. The DoD is putting aside billions to enhance its cyberwar capabilities.

The Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, DARPA, is turning towards the private sector and America’s next generation of computer wiz-kids to recruit forces for its next war. A report released Thursday by the Washington Post reveals that DARPA is looking to invest $1.54 billion during the next five years to up its online abilities, with $110 million going directly to a program dubbed Plan X, but unlike before it won’t be budgeted necessarily for thwarting acts of cyberterrorism. Instead the Pentagon is itching to ensure that America can carry out an offensive cyberwar on other nations rather than just readying the US to defend itself against a similar assault from abroad.

More Genes Than Humans: The Tomato Decoded
By NICHOLAS WADE

The tomato, whose genome has just now been decoded, turns out to be one well-endowed vegetable, possessing 31,760 genes. This rich legacy, possibly a reflection of the disaster that killed off the dinosaurs, is some 7,000 more than that of a person, and presents a complex puzzle to scientists who hope to understand its secrets.

A consortium of plant geneticists from 14 countries has spent nine years decoding the tomato genome in the hope of breeding better ones. The scientists sequenced the genomes of both Heinz 1706, a variety used to make ketchup, and the tomato’s closest wild relative, Solanum pimpinellifolium, which lives in the highlands of Peru, where the tomato’s ancestors originated. Their results were published online Wednesday in the journal Nature.

The sweet and sour of oil
By Hossein Askari

This is the second article in a special series on oil and the Persian Gulf.
Part 1: Riddle of the sands

Contrary to popular belief, all crude oils are not the same. They don't even look the same or have the same color or smell. While there are well over 100 types of crude, depending on where they are found (similar to the wine regions of France!), two important characteristics are used for their classification - specific gravity (that is the density, referred to as light, medium or heavy) and sulfur content (referred to as sweet or sour).

Coded messages for Iran
By Victor Kotsev

Is it a coincidence that the discovery of the most powerful cyber-weapon known to humanity, nicknamed Flame, was announced a few days after a major (if inconclusive) round of nuclear talks between Iran and the West? It is harder to defend this argument if we take into account several other major incidents that have taken place since last Thursday.

A gruesome massacre in Houla in Syria that is set to inflame further the sectarian civil war, and perhaps even to tip the scales against the Syrian regime at the United Nations Security Council, is another dark coincidence. It dims by far the damning report on the Iranian nuclear program that the International Atomic Energy Agency published on Friday, a day after the talks in Baghdad ended. In all, a very remarkable four-day period.

Extreme Energy

In Perspective column by Martin Empson, May 2012

The panic that ensued when tanker drivers threatened to strike recently brought home the absolute centrality of oil to our modern economy.

Oil has been in the news recently, not least because the first few months of 2012 saw some of the highest ever prices for crude. The threat of war on Iran, instability in oil-rich Nigeria and the ongoing economic crisis combined to push prices above $125 a barrel. This is below the record of $147 set in July 2008, but the weakness of the pound and euro means that, in reality, the price is much worse for European consumers.

This short-term peak in prices has roots in these immediate events. But there is a longer-term trend pushing up oil prices. For almost a century the industry has been expanding on the enormous profits that can be made from readily accessible oil. Now this "easy" oil is running out and increasingly the multinationals have to turn to harder to access "extreme energy". There is still debate about whether we have reached peak oil - the point when the maximum rate of production of oil is reached. Some studies suggest we have passed it, others say that it is just around the corner. Once that peak passes, more and more effort has to be put in to extract oil. In other words, it becomes more expensive.

Resilient Revolutions: Bahrain and Yemen

Feature by Dominic Kavakeb and Mirfat Sulaiman, May 2012

The Arab Spring is far from over. In the wake of controversy over the Formula One race, Dominic Kavakeb looks at the movement in Bahrain, while Mirfat Sulaiman considers the ongoing uprising in Yemen

"Sumood" is a common word in Bahrain at the moment. Literally translated it means "resistance", although its meaning is closer to the idea of refusing to give in or persevering through great difficulty.

This word isn't just a reference to the physical action of the Bahraini people it is about a mentality. It encapsulates the mindset that keeps this extraordinary population coming out onto the streets day after day, night after night, to face down repression and demand freedom.

The tragedy occurred May 24. The mother, aged 90, and her son, aged 60, leapt hand in hand from the roof of their apartment building in the capital shortly after 8 a.m.

Chasing the Sun German and Chinese Solar Firms Battle for Survival

By Wiebke Hollersen
Germany was proud of its supposedly future-proof solar industry and subsidized it to the hilt. But then the Chinese got in on the act and started making much cheaper solar cells. Now, following a glut in production, companies in both countries are fighting for survival.
Michael Zhu gazes at the watch he's placed in front of him on the glass table in his office. He'll have to get a move on. He has to walk over to the factory and continue to work on forcing the Germans out of the very market they've created.

Zhu is the vice president of Suntech Power, which has an annual output of 10 million solar panels. No company in the world makes more than his, and no country in the world buys more than Germany.

In the spirit of China and Russia taking risks and profits together, China maintains a positive attitude toward natural gas negotiations between the two countries, the Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping said on Tuesday.

Energy cooperation will be a key topic for Russian president Vladimir Putin during his visit to China from June 5 to 7, the minister said.

Why is Washington so scared of Confucius?
(Global Times)
08:29, May 25, 2012

According to a new US State Department directive last week, Confucius Institutes in the US must obtain American accreditation. The directive also says that some academics at these institutes who are holding J-1 visas will not get their visas extended, which means they will have to leave the US. If the directive comes into force, Confucius Institutes and Schools in the US will face a lot of trouble. The US obviously wants this.

Confucius Institutes have expanded their global presence in recent years. There are now 691 Confucius Institutes and Schools, 69 of which are in the US. Their rapid development can be partly attributed to China's active promotion, but the decisive factor is the great demand for learning Chinese.

As Washington struggles, US downgrade is likely
10:56, July 27, 2011

Could the US lose its top credit rating even if a deal is reached to raise the debt limit?

Market analysts and investors increasingly say yes. The outcome won't be quite as scary as a default, but financial markets would still take a blow. Mortgage rates could rise. States and cities, already strapped, could find it more difficult to borrow. Stocks could lose their gains for the year.

"At this point, we're more concerned about the risk of a downgrade than a default," said Terry Belton, global head of fixed income strategy at JPMorgan Chase. In a conference call with reporters Tuesday, Belton said the loss of the country's AAA rating may rattle markets, but it's "better than missing an interest payment."

Obama Oversees "Kill List" of Targets in Secret Drone War

The New York Times is reporting President Obama personally oversees a "kill list" containing the names and photos of individuals targeted for assassination in the secret U.S. drone war. According to the Times, Obama signs off on every targeted killing in Yemen and Somalia and the more complex or risky strikes in Pakistan. National Security Adviser Thomas Donilon said, "He is determined that he will make these decisions about how far and wide these operations will go." Obama is also said to personally approve every addition to the expanding "kill list." Individuals on the list include U.S. citizens, as well teenage girls as young as 17 years old. The Times quotes former White House Chief of Staff William Daley about Obama’s decision to assassinate Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen, in Yemen. According to Daley, Obama called the decision to strike the U.S.-born cleric "an easy one." Since April, the United States has carried out at least 14 drone strikes in Yemen and six in Pakistan. Over the weekend, a U.S. drone strike in Yemen killed at least five people.
U.S. Plan to Arm Italy’s Drone Fleet Faces Criticism

The Wall Street Journal reports the Obama administration plans to arm Italy’s fleet of Reaper drone aircraft, a move that could open the door for sales of advanced hunter-killer drone technology to other allies. The sale will make Italy the first foreign country besides Britain to fly U.S. drones armed with missiles and laser-guided bombs. Critics of the proposed sale include the head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, who said, "I am concerned by the proliferation of these weapons systems and don’t think we should be selling them."
Pressure Mounting on Syria After 108 Killed in Houla Massacre

International pressure is mounting on the Syrian government following a massacre in the town of Houla that killed at least 108 people, almost half of them children. U.N. observers attributed the massacre at least partly to the Syrian army and pro-government militias, but the Syrian government blamed Islamist militants. Earlier today, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met U.N. envoy Kofi Annan. On Monday, Annan said Syria must take bold steps to implement the U.N. peace plan.

Kofi Annan: "I urge the government to take bold steps to signal that it is serious in its intention to resolve this crisis peacefully and for everyone involved to help create the right context for a credible political process. And this message of peace is not only for the government, but for everyone, every individual with a gun. The six-point plan must be implemented comprehensively, and this is not happening to date."

On Sunday, the U.N. Security Council condemned the use of artillery and tanks in the Houla killings, but U.N. observers are now saying most of the dead were executed at close range. Meanwhile, U.S. General Martin Dempsey, the chair of the joint chiefs of staff, threatened military intervention in Syria during an interview on Fox.

Martin Dempsey: "There is always a military option, but that military option should always be wielded carefully, because, one thing we’ve learned about war, I have learned personally about war, is that it has a dynamic all its own, it takes on a life all its own. And so, you’ll always find military leaders to be somewhat cautious about the use of force, because we’re never entirely sure what comes out on the other side. But that said, it may come to a point with Syria because of the atrocities."

Syrian Filmmaker Who Appeared on Democracy Now! Killed in Homs

In news from Syria, reports have emerged that the young Syrian filmmaker Bassel Shahade was killed on Monday in the city of Homs. Bassel appeared on Democracy Now! in December. At the time, he asked to only be identified by his first name for security reasons. He described the fighting in Homs.

Bassel Shahade: "The violence in the city of Homs is like — what I saw the last week I was there ... like, it’s threatening to turn into like almost a civil war. A heavy crackdown on the city, punishing the rising area and killing the civilians, is forcing the locals to form like an armed resistance to the regime’s forces. And they are supported by army deserters. So the fight is between the locals and the security forces and the supporters of the regime. The rising areas are besieged by the regime forces."

Democracy Now! staff first met Bassel Shahade at Syracuse University. He was a Fulbright scholar there studying filmmaking. Again, Bassel Shahade, the young Syrian filmmaker, went back to Syria, was killed in Homs.
Air Strikes Kill 8 Family Members, Alleged Al-Qaeda Leader in Afghanistan

In news from Afghanistan, NATO officials say a coalition air strike has killed a Saudi man who is being described as al-Qaeda’s second in command in Afghanistan. Sakhr al-Taifi reportedly oversaw the transport of militants into Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Afghan authorities say at least eight family members, including six children, have been killed in a NATO air strike in the eastern province of Paktia. In other news from Afghanistan, 160 girls have been hospitalized after they were poisoned in their classrooms. A similar attack last week sent 120 girls and three teachers to a hospital. Afghan officials blamed the attacks on radicals opposed to the education of women and girls.
Bahraini Activist Alkhawaja Ends Hunger Strike; 2nd Activist Released

Imprisoned Bahraini human rights activist Abdulhadi Alkhawaja ended his hunger strike Monday after not eating for 110 days. His lawyer said the hunger strike successfully helped shed light on the plight of political prisoners in Bahrain. While Alkhawaja remains locked up, his colleague Nabeel Rajab was released on bail after being held for nearly a month. Rajab, the president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, still faces a travel ban and criminal charges for allegedly "inciting" protests and "defaming" security forces. Rajab vowed to keep fighting for democracy in Bahrain.

Nabeel Rajab: "I’m going to continue my struggle no matter how much they’re going to cost me, no matter how many days they’re going to put me or how many months or how many years. I believe that’s the cost of the struggle, that’s the cost of the freedom that we are fighting for, and I’m willing to pay that cost."

Wednesday marks the second anniversary of the deadly Israeli raid.
Obama Administration Asks Judge to Undo Order Against NDAA Indefinite Detention

The Obama administration has asked a federal judge to reverse her order barring enforcement of part of the National Defense Authorization Act that permits indefinite military detention. Earlier this month, Judge Katherine Forrest struck down part of the NDAA that allows the government to indefinitely detain anyone it considers a terrorism suspect anywhere in the world without charge or trial, including U.S. citizens. The judge’s ruling came in a lawsuit filed by a group of journalists, scholars and political activists including Chris Hedges and Noam Chomsky.
Romney Expected to Clinch GOP Nomination with Texas Win; Obama Campaign Slams Romney’s Bain Record

In campaign news, Mitt Romney is expected to unofficially clinch the Republican presidential nomination today with a win in the Republican primary in Texas. Meanwhile, the Obama campaign continues to criticize Romney over his record at the private equity firm Bain Capital. Obama’s senior campaign adviser Robert Gibbs appeared on Face the Nation Sunday.

Robert Gibbs: "What Bain Capital never did was focus on job creation. That’s not what Bain Capital does. It loads up companies with debt. It takes money out of those companies and pays those investors. It’s not about job creation. And that’s what Mitt Romney is running on."

Radiation from Japan’s Fukushima Disaster Found in California Tuna

Researchers have found radioactive bluefin tuna off the coast of California that were contaminated by last year’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant disaster in Japan. The discovery marks the first time radiation from the disaster has been found in fish that migrated into California waters. Researchers say the levels of radioactive cesium in the tuna are 10 times higher than normal, but they said the amounts are still below levels considered unsafe for humans. The ocean off Japan was contaminated last year after thousands of tons of seawater were used to cool reactors in an attempt to prevent a total nuclear meltdown following an earthquake and tsunami.
New Orleans Women’s Activist Group Hit by Apparent Arson Attack

The headquarters of a New Orleans group that advocates for poor women of color and transgender people has been heavily damaged in an apparent arson attack. The group, Women With a Vision, provides advocacy, health education and support to marginalized women. A room containing materials used for sexual health education was targeted in the attack, according to one report. The group’s executive director, Deon Haywood, said she believes the attack was intentional, but that it would not stop them from helping those without a voice.
Minnesota Church Known for Support of Social Justice Destroyed by Fire

A church in Minneapolis known for supporting LGBT rights and other social justice issues has burned to the ground. The century-old Walker Community United Methodist Church was home to progressive groups including Communities United Against Police Brutality, Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee and the Welfare Rights Committee. The church welcomed LGBT people and approved a statement last year embracing same-sex marriage. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but one official said it may have been sparked by lightning. The church building was also the birthplace of KFAI Community Radio and the station’s first home.
DOJ Probes Reports of Rampant Sexual Abuse by Guards at Alabama Women’s Prison

The U.S. Justice Department is investigating allegations of widespread sexual abuse by male guards at a women’s prison in Alabama. The probe comes after the legal aid group Equal Justice Initiative filed a complaint based on interviews with more than 50 women. The group found sexual assault and harassment had become a way of life for women prisoners who were routinely punished and often placed in segregation if they reported the abuse. One former inmate said male guards had unrestricted access to showers and would follow women to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Peru Gov’t Declares State of Emergency over Anti-Mining Protests

In Peru, the government has declared a "state of emergency" in the highland province of Espinar, saying two people were killed and dozens of police officers injured in anti-mining protests. Protesters have halted production at a copper mine owned by a Swiss-based company, Xstrata plc, saying the mine is contaminating local water supplies. The 30-day "state of emergency" places the military in charge and allows for the suspension of civil liberties.
Protester Interrupts Murdoch Hearing, Calls Tony Blair a "War Criminal"

In news from Britain, an antiwar activist disrupted former prime minister Tony Blair’s testimony Monday before the judicial inquiry investigating the Rupert Murdoch spying scandal. The activist, David Lawley Wakelin, was removed from the proceedings after he called Blair a war criminal.

David Lawley Wakelin: "This man should be arrested for war crimes. JPMorgan paid him off for the Iraq war three months after he invaded Iraq. He held up the Iraq Bank for 20 billion. He was then paid $6 million every year, and still is, from JPMorgan, six months after he left office. The man is a war criminal."

In Far Northwest, a New Border Focus on Latinos
By WILLIAM YARDLEY

FORKS, Wash. — The Olympic Peninsula has always felt more like the edge of the world than a mere national boundary.

Its ocean shoreline, the northwesternmost coast of the contiguous United States, is accessible by a single road, Highway 101, and it has long been traveled by a distinctive fleet: loud logging trucks rumbling out of the dark and wet woods, rusty pickups with windows pronouncing “Native Pride,” stray Subarus hauling surfboards and kayaks to the cold Pacific.

Then the United States Border Patrol vehicles started showing up.

Sometimes they respond unexpectedly to assist with mundane traffic stops conducted by the local police. Sometimes they hover outside the warehouse where Mexican immigrants sell the salal they pick in the temperate rain forest. Sometimes they confront people whose primary offense, many argue, is skin tone.

Leading article: Egypt's elections leave its divisions unresolved
The results of the first round of Egypt's presidential election are at once hugely positive, and hugely negative.

They are hugely positive because they show that by far the biggest of the Arab Spring countries has more or less successfully embraced the democratic process. Some 16 months after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, Egypt has elected a lower house of parliament and looks set to elect a President.

A última hora
Pedro Miguel
