As the Obama administration concludes a settlement with five major banks, quashing state investigations into rampant fraud related to home foreclosures, speculation in the mortgage-backed securities that caused the 2008 meltdown is once again picking up.

Saturday's New York Times reported that Greg Lippmann, a former Deutsche Bank trader who made millions of dollars personally and $1.5 billion for Deutsche Bank by betting against mortgage-backed securities, at the same time his bank was selling them to clients, is back in business buying and selling these toxic assets.

Greek deal: More pain for workers, no end to Europe’s crisis

The €130 billion-plus (US$172 billion) package of loans agreed by euro zone finance ministers will not protect Greece from bankruptcy. It merely postpones the inevitable, while European and international finance capital use Greece as a testing ground for their scorched-earth policy of savage austerity being rolled out across the continent.

Nothing is guaranteed as yet. Under the plan, holders of privately-held Greek bonds are to be asked to participate in their “voluntary” restructuring, accepting losses of up to 53 percent. It will not be clear until March whether this has been accepted. Moreover, Monday’s package is entirely dependent on further spending cuts of €3 billion: only if this is achieved in a “timely and effective manner” will aid be forthcoming from the European Union (EU).

Economic crisis in Russia deepens

With many indicators pointing to a new downturn in the world economy, high-ranking Russian politicians such as Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Deputy Finance Minister Sergey Storchak warned of “a difficult 2012” at the start of this year. Despite the growth of the country’s GDP by 4.3 percent, there were already signs of recession in 2011.

Russia is highly dependent on the export of raw materials. Around 40 percent of the state’s revenues come from the oil and gas sectors. The government’s budget dependence on revenues from these sectors fluctuated between 37 and 47 percent in recent years.

Sydney councils requested to inform number of Korean prostitutes
The Korean government says it has written to a dozen Sydney councils asking for any information they might have about Korean nationals who are involved in prostitution at local brothels, ABC News has reported.
The letter from Korea's consul general Kim Jin-soo says the government believes the number of Korean nationals involved in the sex industry could be growing and it wants to eliminate human trafficking and sex slavery while protecting the victims.

Putin warns US against rearming Georgia

Vladimir Putin said that Russia still hoped to become friends with the Georgian people and criticized the US authorities for rearming the current Georgian regime.

At the meeting with military commanders in the Moscow Region Putin said that the severing of relations between Russia and Georgia was not Russia’s fault or initiative.

“This was the result of the policy that the Georgian authorities conducted back then and still attempt to conduct now,” Putin told the officers. “But we never equated the Georgian authorities with the Georgian people. And I still very much hope that this really brotherly nation will finally understand that Russia is not an enemy, but is a friend and the relations will be restored,” the Russian PM affirmed.

High spy: WikiLeaks accuses Swedish FM of spying for US

The world famous whistleblowing group WikiLeaks claims it has documents exposing Sweden’s foreign minister Carl Bildt as an American spy and is promising to publish them soon.
The documents prove that Bildt has been a US informer since 1973 and that he collaborated with the US government in ways that contradict Swedish law, the Swedish tabloid Expressen reports.

Sunday Times journalist Marie Colvin killed in Homs
Marie Colvin, the respected Sunday Times journalist, was killed today alongside French photojournalist Remi Ochlik in Syria.

The veteran correspondents were killed by a rocket as they fled the house they were staying in, which was hit during shelling in Homs, a witness told Reuters.

Exceptionally' mild weather on the way
Tomorrow is expected to be “exceptionally” mild, with temperatures up to 10 degrees Celsius above average for the time of year, forecasters said.
The mercury is expected to reach 17C (63F) in eastern parts of the UK - against an average of 7C (45F).
Chris Burton, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "It will be exceptionally mild for this time of year."

Puede decirse que hay una conciencia colectiva de decadencia que no es general pero sí muy extendida. La ética social, las obligaciones morales están cada vez menos presentes; las acciones individuales amorales, injustas, ilegales, parecen imponerse a toda conciencia colectiva que constituye la argamasa de la sociedad por encima de sus conflictos sectoriales.

Boaventura de Sousa Santos es un activista y científico social portugués. Su trabajo en las chabolas y su cercanía al Foro Social Mundial han marcado su pensamiento. Las investigaciones de Santos van desde la epistemología, pasando por la teoría social, la sociología del derecho, la poesía hasta la música. Es también Coordinador de la obra colectiva de investigación “Reinventar la Emancipación Social: Para nuevos Manifiestos”. En esta entrevista, realizada en el CIDECI San Cristóbal de las Casas, Boaventura habla de los procesos Emancipatorios en América Latina, la Epistemología del Sur, Los fascismos sociales y el narcotráfico y su recién iniciación como cantante de Rap, entre otras cosas más.

Christian Javier Castro: Se habla de una crisis de racionalidad, ¿Cómo pensar desde el Sur?

Boaventura de Sousa Santos: No es fácil, porque el Sur fue colonizado por el Norte y por eso mucha de la racionalidad y de los instrumentos de la racionalidad a través de los cuales la modernidad occidental se impuso, y que fueron básicamente dos, el Capitalismo y el Colonialismo, penetraron profundamente en todo el Sur global, pero esta imposición no fue una imposición sin lucha, fue una imposición con resistencias, hubo espacios que se mantuvieron libres y que resistieron, culturas ancestrales muy fuertes, algunas se adaptaron, otras que lograron defenderse de una manera más fuerte, otras de manera más débil y en este momento esto se nota con los Movimientos Sociales que hay en el Sur global; que para mi no es un Sur geográfico, es un Sur metafórico o retorico, en la medida que es una metáfora del conjunto de los pueblos que han sufrido sistemáticamente con el Colonialismo y el Capitalismo, o sea, hay un Sur en el Norte, como el vídeo que acabamos de ver de la Otra Campaña en Nueva York, que es un Sur en Nueva York.

Entonces, las campañas de los Movimientos de resistencias de estos pueblos, que durante mucho tiempo, sobre todo los Movimientos de Liberación Nacional, fueron muy dependientes de la cultura y de la modernidad occidental, específicamente el caso del Marxismo por ejemplo. Más tarde vemos asistir a muchos otros movimientos que van a rescatar otras formas de pensar, otras formas de imaginar el mundo, otras cosmogonías, otras cosmovisiones que estaban suprimidas, que estaban silenciadas y que en mi Epistemología se pueden simplemente rescatar a través de lo que llamo una Sociología de las Ausencias porque se han quedado invisibles.

Por eso hay un proceso de rescate, que es un proceso difícil y que pasa, por un lado, de perder la idea de que la Modernidad Occidental es la única forma de racionalidad; En segundo lugar, que la racionalidad occidental es homogénea. La racionalidad occidental, por el Capitalismo y el Colonialismo, sacrificó mucho de su diversidad de la gran riqueza de autores que nunca podrían ser útiles para la Conquista, que nunca podrían ser útiles para la miseración evangélica de la iglesia católica porque eran hombres y mujeres que dudaban de todas las certezas de la modernidad occidental, entonces hubo ahí un desperdicio de experiencia de la modernidad occidental por servir al Colonialismo y al Capitalismo.

“Failure: so much promise, so much disappointment,” proclaimed a Los Angeles Magazine cover article in 2009. The same magazine had hailed his election three years earlier with the headline “Pop star mayor.”
