“We should keep an eye on Iran” - Medvedev
Ahead of the nuclear summit in Washington, Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev told American ABC channel that Iran needs to be more open with its nuclear program.
Though the issue of Iran's nuclear ambitions is not officially on the agenda, it is expected to be at the center of many discussions between world leaders, who are arriving in Washington for a two-day summit focusing on global nuclear security. “Iran's nuclear program lacks transparency, and that's the main trouble,” believes the Russian President.
“We understand that Iran, like any other state, has a right to peaceful atomic energy. But we should realize what its ultimate aim is, and why it doesn't respond to the proposals made to it on the part of the global community, including Russia,” Dmitry Medvedev told ABC journalists.
The Russian President acknowledged that “Whether their aim is to develop nuclear weapons or not, I have no idea. But we should keep an eye on that. Such steps on their part as to begin further uranium enrichment up to 20 per cent using Iran's own facilities, in spite of the fact that we have offered to do it with the help of the Russian, French and Turkish sides, is at the very least, indicative of their desire to come into conflict on this issue with the global community.”
Russian military chief says Iran bombing inadmissible
Russia’s Chief of General Staff has told the press that bombing Iranian territory in order to make the country give up its nuclear program was inadmissible.
General Nikolay Makarov said at a press conference on Monday that possible bombings of Iran by the United States or Israel were an “extreme option that no one had the right to allow”. “As of the possible bombings, I doubt that they could really take place, though I think that there are such plans,” Makarov said. The general also added that Iran will get Russian anti-aircraft systems S-300 only after the question is “solved on a state level”.
