Toyota recalls 9,400 Lexus GX 460 in North America

Toyota Motor Corp. Monday afternoon announced a recall of 9,400 units of its 2010 Lexus GX 460 after it suspended sales last week.

Monday's recall is the latest in a string of campaigns the automaker has issued since January as its safety record has come under scrutiny.

The company will issue a software update to the Vehicle Stability Control system, which helps control a loss of traction in turns as a result of front- or rear-wheel slippage during cornering.

The recall covers 9,400 vehicles in North America and about 1,000 in other countries. It covers all vehicles built since Nov. 16, 2009.

If the SUV is driven through a sharp turn at a high speed, "this could cause the rear tires to slip so that the vehicle strikes a curb or slides off pavement," Toyota said in a letter to U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Monday, adding that it could cause a crash. The electronic stability control system did not initiate fast enough.

Monday's recall follows last Friday's call-back of nearly 600,000 1998-2010 Sienna minivans to address potential corrosion in the spare tire carrier cable in cold weather states.

Toyota has also recalled about 8.5 million vehicles over sudden acceleration concerns, including 6 million in the United States.
